20世纪80年代初，街道厂办得如火如荼，而运输业则没跟上，打包托运慢，容易误期不说，搬运工还不负责，野蛮装卸那是常事，因此稍大一点的厂都会自己开卡车长途进货。
而各地的价格有时会天差地别，远处带点东西来能便宜许多，所以当时司机是很吃香的行当，尤其是卡车司机。

1977年，石建设高中毕业后进了街道厂，他父母双亡，也没有其他人了，因为人聪明，性情又老实，厂里就让他跑运输。

石建设开始上班后，先跟着师傅一块上路当副驾驶。
在时，他就喜欢看小说，喜欢音乐，算是个文学青年。

后来师傅单干去了，石建设就一个人单跑，反倒比当初与师傅合跑时更误不了事，只是吹口琴的爱好保留了下来。
有一次，厂里给他一个任务，要去河南一个化工厂拉一批货。
任务很紧急，他日赶夜赶，这一天贪赶路程，误了时间，赶不及到前面招待所过夜了。
其实这也是常事，以前碰到这种情况就在车里窝一晚，睡足了再赶路，反正身边一直都带着干粮。

石建设先是吹了一阵口琴，等觉得肚子饿了要吃干粮，才发现水已经喝光了，而这时车停在一个前不着村后不着店的山道上，于是他从车上下来，看看有没有地方可以讨口水喝。

下了车，极目望去，公路边上有条小道，大约两三百米远的山腰上有一间小屋，里面亮着灯光。
于是他提着水壶走过去，敲了敲门，听见里面有个老妇人问：“谁啊？”

石建设说明了来意，门开了，开门的是个少数民族打扮的年轻女子，虽然肤色因为日晒而黝黑，可是长相却相当俏丽。
看到他，这女子脸上飞上了一抹羞红，更显得可爱，石建设都看呆了，等听得边上的老妇人要他过来倒水，他才回过神来。

这户人家就母女两个人，正围坐在火塘边烤地瓜。
石建设去倒满了水，正要告辞离开，那老妇人突然从身后拿出一个漆成红色的小板凳要他坐下，石建设脸皮薄，没好意思拒绝，便坐下了，无意间发现那女子的脸更红了。
他只道是乡下姑娘不好意思见陌生人，当时没有多想。
老妇人跟他有一搭没一搭地说话，还拿地瓜给他吃，问了他不少事，像今年几岁了，家住哪里，家里有几口人之类，简直跟查户口一样。
石建设人老实，一句句全照实说了。

说了一阵，石建设见天色不早了，便要离开。
那老妇人突然冷笑着说：“你真的要走吗？”石建设愣了愣，一时不明白老妇人话里的意思，以为进了黑店，连忙摸出钱来递给老妇人，但老妇人没收钱，只说以一年为期，明年的今天以前，一定要重新回到这里。
他不理解到底出了什么事，让这个刚才还和蔼可亲的老妇人突然就变了脸，于是惴惴不安地走了出去，往外走时，那少女却送到门口，低声说了一句：“别忘了。
”这句话让石建设心头一动，几乎就要留下不走了，但最终还是开了车上路。

师傅拿着杯子看了半天，突然脸色变了，问他是不是在山里苗人的小屋中坐过一个红漆小板凳。
他说是，但不知这和坐凳子有什么关系，师傅却要他立刻买了几份礼品，马上带他回去。
开始石建设还不愿意，因为可能会误了厂里的期限，师傅发了脾气，说：“你这小子，性命攸关了，还不知所以，你是碰到盘婆婆了。
”

石建设买了礼品回到那山腰的小屋，师傅敲了敲门，但门一直没开。
师傅叫了好一阵盘婆婆，说石建设是外乡人，不懂规矩，也没做什么坏事，求盘婆婆饶他一命，那老妇才开了门，板着脸让石建设进门。

石建设跟着盘婆婆到了屋后，盘婆婆用一块碎瓷片往石建设喉咙里刮了一阵，直到刮出血来才让他走。
石建设走时，看到后窗里露出那少女的侧脸，她的脸上露出凄楚的表情，让他也感到自己真做了什么坏事一般。

出去后，师傅才松了一口气，石建设仍不知发生了什么事，师傅说那老妇是盘姓的苗人。
这一姓苗人有个习俗，假如家中有女儿要招入门女婿，必备一个红漆凳，叫闺凳。
如果有过路人被看中了，便拿出闺凳让他坐。
假如坐的话，就说明是同意了，而这时盘婆婆就会给这个人下蛊，不论那人走到天涯海角，如期不归，这蛊就会发作，什么药都救不了。

这个盘婆婆准是看了石建设人老实，长得也英俊，便想招他为女婿。
幸好石建设当时没做出格的事，最后盘婆婆自知理亏，才解了他的蛊。
石建设知道了事情的原委，不知为什么并不很感激师傅，脑海里总想着那个苗人少女凄楚的模样。

这之后，石建设把货拉到厂里，便辞职不做了，谁也不知道他去了哪里。
前几年有个电视台去湘西采风，到了一个很偏僻的苗寨。
这苗寨虽然经济十分穷苦，但单纯的生活反倒很快乐。
